ON THE SPOT: SHOP YOUR CLOSET

on-the-spot

Despite the fact that it’s been unseasonably warm the past few weeks (not joking- the temperature as I’m writing this is 83 degrees. What up, October!), I’m elbow deep in the process of transitioning my wardrobe for fall. What is it about a new season that makes us all yearn for a fresh start? And while I am all for picking up new pieces as the weather changes, truth be told, I’m a bigger believer in “shopping your closet,” i.e. taking a good, hard look at what you already own from last season and finding a way to repurpose those pieces. If you find yourself weary of your wardrobe, or thinking “OMG I have nothing to wear” as you stare into a packed-to-the-brim closet, then you’re not alone. Here’s how I’m combating that oh-so-familiar feeling.

SAY GOODBYE TO SUMMER

Buy storage bins. Place summer clothes into storage bins. Repeat. When I open my closet this fall, you know what I want to see? Clothing that’s flattering and seasonally appropriate, so I can actually identify what I have to work with. De-cluttering will make daily dressing so much less frustrating. Give yourself a little space, lady!

GET SERVED

On the fence about a few items or aren’t sure whether they’re still in-style? Ask yourself this question- “Does it serve me?” Whether it’s an item you bought last season or your favorite sweater from college, be honest and blunt with yourself. If it serves a purpose (you wear it, it’s for a specific occasion, it’s from an important event in your life), keep it. If it doesn’t- it’s time for it to go. And if you’re still having trouble, consider the following:

  • Does this fit me properly?
  • Have I worn it in the last year?
  • Is it still in good condition?
  • Does it fit my current lifestyle?
  • Does it work with the pieces in my closet?

If you answered NO to any of these questions, cut the cord.

DONATE, DONATE, DONATE

Feeling wasteful for getting rid of things? I struggle with this too. But just because an item no longer serves you, doesn’t mean it won’t serve someone else. So round-up your new cast-offs, fold them properly, and donate them to an organization who will find someone who can use them,. My favorites? Goodwill & AMVETS.

RESPECT THE CLASSICS

Odds are, your riding boots, well-fitting denim, black blazer and cozy sweaters from last year should all still hold up. These investment pieces shouldn’t need to be repurchased each season. They may, however, require a little respect and TLC. Get to know your neighborhood shoemaker and drycleaner and give these pieces the refresh they need. And as you wear them this season, be kind to them. Hang them properly, clean them properly, treat your leather and suede goods so they can withstand the cold/wet weather, and you’ll be in just as good of a place next fall as you are right now.

You still with me? You’ve decluttered. You know that you want to purchase a few new items. Great! And now you know what you have a need for.

My needs this season include a few trendy statement pieces that I can incorporate into my existing wardrobe. So when I come across a polka dot off-the-shoulder maxi dress that’s UNDER $25, you can bet I’m always going to be the first in line… or online, in this case. This bardot neckline maxi tie waist dress from SheIn is going to be at the top of my rotation this season. Perfect for date night or dinner with the girls (with lots o’ room to accommodate a big meal), this breezy little number hits the spot and looks super chic paired with a leather moto jacket. and black hat (both of which I’m repurposing from last year, thank you very much!)
